Ulysses S. Grant Home
The Ulysses S. Grant Home connects Galena with the Civil War general who became the 18th president. Local residents presented the Italianate house to Grant in 1865 after his return from the war. Period furnishings help preserve its historic character, with many pieces associated with the Grant family still displayed inside.
Belvedere Mansion and Gardens
Built in 1857 for prominent businessman J. Russell Jones, Belvedere Mansion and Gardens offers a glimpse into Galena’s mid-19th-century grandeur. Guided tours explore the 22-room Italianate mansion, where a grand staircase sets the historic tone. Outside, formal gardens feature seasonal plantings, with vintage and heirloom varieties contributing to the period-inspired landscape.
Dowling House
Built in 1826 by Irish immigrant John Dowling, this limestone structure on Diagonal Street stands as Galena's oldest building. The first floor once served as the town's only trading post while the family lived upstairs. Thirty-minute guided tours, offered seasonally, show off period furnishings and artifacts from the early lead-mining era.
Galena and U.S. Grant History Museum
Galena and U.S. Grant History Museum explores the people and events that shaped Galena, including the community’s strong connection to Ulysses S. Grant. Exhibits cover regional history and Grant’s story, while the Peace in Union exhibition depicts the 1865 surrender between Grant and Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House.
Horseshoe Mound Preserve
Perched off Blackjack Road, Horseshoe Mound Preserve overlooks three states from a restored oak savanna dotted with unusual rock outcroppings. Viewing scopes at the stone gathering circle let visitors pick out geological mounds across the river valley. Trails wind through the property, making it a popular spot for a picnic with sweeping views of downtown Galena.
Chestnut Mountain Resort
Overlooking the Upper Mississippi River valley, Chestnut Mountain Resort provides outdoor recreation throughout the year. Winter brings skiing and snowboarding across 19 trails with a 475-foot vertical drop. Warmer months shift the focus to activities such as mountain biking and the Alpine Slide, making the mountain a destination beyond ski season.
Galena River Trail
The Galena River Trail follows the former route of the Burlington Railroad, built in 1886, tracing the Galena River for 8.8 miles toward the Mississippi backwaters. Crushed rock surfacing makes the path popular with cyclists year round. Old signal foundations still mark the way, and the route ends near Chestnut Mountain Resort.
Hoof It Goat Trek
Hoof It Goat Treks turns a woodland hike into an up-close animal experience in Galena. Goats accompany participants through native prairie and forest, stopping for hand-fed treats along the route. The standard trek covers about 1.25 miles and typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Reservations are required for treks.

Fried Green Tomatoes
Fried Green Tomatoes pairs rustic Italian cooking with the character of a historic downtown Galena building. Dinner centers on dishes such as steak, seafood, and homemade lasagna, complemented by an extensive wine selection. The multilevel dining space adds architectural interest to the experience. Its namesake fried green tomatoes remain a signature menu choice.
Blaum Bros. Distilling Co.
Blaum Bros. Distilling Co. brings Galena’s craft spirits scene into focus at a family-owned distillery founded by two brothers. Tours offer a closer look at whiskey making and the distilling process. Afterward, the Public House provides a casual setting to explore the company’s handcrafted spirits, including its range of whiskey blends.
Durty Gurt's
Durty Gurt's serves half-pound burgers and boozy milkshakes in a casual, sign-covered diner near Main Street. Specialty options like the Hawaiian and the Inferno burger draw regulars back again and again. Gluten-free buns and a few seafood dishes round out the menu for a laid-back lunch or dinner stop downtown.
Otto's Place
Otto's Place occupies a building dating to 1899, tucked across the river from Main Street since opening in 2011. The scratch-made breakfast and brunch menu includes a smothered burrito loaded with chipotle sauce and seasoned potatoes. A quieter alternative to the busier downtown strip, it draws a steady crowd most mornings.
Log Cabin Steakhouse
Log Cabin Steakhouse has been part of downtown Galena's dining scene since 1937, making it the city's longest continuously operating restaurant. USDA Prime steaks anchor the menu, while Greek influences reflect the Rigopoulos family's decades of ownership. The selection includes prime rib and filet mignon. Flaming saganaki is prepared tableside for a distinctive start to dinner.
Bread & Vine
Opened on Main Street in 2021, Bread & Vine pairs French technique from chef Eric Bonnetain with flavors that reach toward the Mediterranean and Asia. Croissants and tarts come out of the kitchen throughout the day alongside a savory menu of small plates. The wine and cocktail bar makes it a natural stop for both breakfast and a late dinner.
Vinny Vanucchi's
Vinny Vanucchi's has served made-from-scratch Italian dishes on Main Street for more than 33 years, following recipes passed down from co-owner's grandmother, Lucille LaCorte. Fifteen distinct dining rooms range from cozy nooks to larger group spaces, and a hidden 1920s-style speakeasy sits behind the main trattoria. An outdoor cappuccino garden offers al fresco seating in warmer months.
